BBC SCOTLAND'S Kaye Adams Programme held a call-in on Scotland's right to hold indyref2 this morning.

The choice of subject followed the publication of Boris Johnson's letter to Nicola Sturgeon yesterday, which informed her that the Scottish Government's Section 30 request had been rejected.

The Prime Minister said he had "carefully considered and noted the arguments set out for a transfer of power from the UK Parliament to the Scottish Parliament to allow for further independence referendums".

But, he added, given that Sturgeon and her predecessor had made a “personal promise that the 2014 independence referendum was a “once-in-a-generation vote” he could not agree to her request.

Sturgeon has since hit out at the decision, saying the Tories are “terrified of Scotland having the right to choose our own future”.

And Constitutional Relations Secretary Michael Russell has said the Scottish Government still intends to hold indyref2 later this year.

Adams took a number of calls from people with a range of views, but Pete sounded particularly passionate in his call for a fresh vote on Scottish independence.

He told the presenter: "Good morning Kaye. I've been listening to all the Unionists banting on about what this and what that and what if, and Scotland - "

Adams cut in to insist there had been "fair representation" on the show - but Pete asked if he could continue making his point.

He went on: "So, 1707, we've been tied to this Union. It was signed when people were poor, people were illiterate in Scotland - that's not the case anymore. Scotland have very intelligent - "

Adams then cut the caller off once again, asking him to stick solely to discussing the independence case from 2014 onwards.

He replied: "Okay, right, 2014 was a different ballgame. In 2014 we didn't have this mess of Brexit. When we had the 62% [Remain result] we weren't given the opportunity to stay where we wanted to be. And that's very important, Kaye, to the people of Scotland.

"Now the boy that was on there - saying what can Scotland live on. Well let me tell him this. When Scotland takes away its oil and gas, and don't go into the situation of 'that'll run out' etc etc because they're still pumping out the North Sea."

Adams then cut in to say: "Or indeed the environmental question. We do have a climate crisis, don't we?"

Pete went on: "And then we've got our food and drink situation, we've got all these things in Scotland. Cut them off going down to England and you'll soon hear what we've got."

Pete then refers to the high number of seats won by the SNP at last month's General Election as a further example of a mandate for indyref2.

The caller goes on: "Nicola has done it right. She has said we are not going to accept this as a democratic country, supposedly in a democratic world."
