SPAIN’s Attorney General’s office has told the country’s Supreme Court that jailed independence leader Oriol Junqueras should be allowed to take his seat as a MEP.

In a report released this morning, they said he should be allowed out of prison to complete the paperwork required by the European Parliament and Spain’s Electoral Board (JEC) to take up his position.

It follows a ruling from the European Court of Justice (ECJ) that Junqueras was entitled to parliamentary immunity from the time the election results were declared – five months before he was sentenced to 13 years for his part in the October 2017 Catalan independence referendum.

The State Solicitors yesterday spoke out against attempts to influence them on their opinion, with their professional association saying in a statement that it rejected any attempt to interfere with their finding.

Exiled former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, who is also a MEP-elect, wrote on Twitter: “This is what the ECJ says and what the TS [Supreme Court] should have allowed since the day after the election. They are too late … The lawyer advocates that Junqueras can pick up the minutes and go to Brussels…”
