A PROMINENT figure in the Cherry Case – which successfully took Boris Johnson to court over his Brexit plans – has come under fire for clubbing a fox to death.

Jolyon Maugham QC, a prominent Remain supporter, took to social media yesterday morning to boast about the brutal way in which he attacked the trapped animal with a baseball bat.

Shortly after 8am, the lawyer tweeted: “Already this morning I have killed a fox with a baseball bat. How’s your Boxing Day going?”

He went on to explain that he had attacked the fox after it became trapped in the protective netting around a hen house in his garden.

Maugham, 48, said that the incident “wasn’t a great deal of fun” and that he “didn’t know what else to do”.

The tweet drew criticism from a number of corners, most notably the RSPCA, who described the incident as “distressing” after being copied into the Twitter discussion.

The animal welfare charity then urged anyone with any information on the incident to report it: “This is distressing to hear. We’d urge anyone with firsthand knowledge to report it to us by calling 0300 1234 999.”

The QC has since apologised to those “upset by my tweet” and addressed those who think he “may have broken the law” that he has reported his details to the RSPCA.

Maugham featured in a number of legal challenges to a Tory Brexit, most notably when a group of MPs and lawyers led by the SNP’s Joanna Cherry successfully challenged the Prime Minister’s illegal prorogation of Parliament.
