LABOUR’S new shadow Secretary of State for Scotland is the MP for Rochdale.

Tony Lloyd has been appointed by Jeremy Corbyn to shadow Alister Jack in the Commons. He replaces Lesley Laird who lost her place in the shadow cabinet after she was defeated in the general election.

Lloyd will do the job at the same time as holding the shadow Northern Ireland secretary brief.

Last week Labour lost all but one of its Scottish MPs. Only Ian Murray survived. He was previously shadow Scotland Secretary but quit in protest at Corbyn’s leadership.

Murray has put the blame for the disastrous election result firmly on the shoulders of the leader. He said: "Every door I knocked on, and my team and I spoke to 11,000 people, mentioned Corbyn.

"Not Brexit but Corbyn. I’ve been saying this for years.

"The outcome is that we’ve let the country down and we must change course and fast."
