A NEW work by Scottish artist Peter Howson, the Massacre of Srebrenica, has been unveiled at a Glasgow museum.
The painting commemorating next year’s 25th anniversary of the atrocity was created by the former war artist for St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art. More than 8000 people, mainly Muslim men and boys, were murdered by Bosnian Serb armed forces at the height of the Bosnian War in July 1995.
Howson said it was difficult to put into words the horror of the scenes.
He said: “I was there as a war artist during this time and witnessed what I can only describe as utter hell on Earth. “The experience caused me many years of illness and the break-up of my family.
“I still have memories too painful to talk about but I find that painting these terrible events helps me to try to understand why we do such evil things to each other.”
The work is loaned to Glasgow Museums for an initial period of three years and can be seen for free.
