THE number of people registered to vote in Thursday's General Election is at its highest level in decades, new figures have revealed.

According to the Scottish Assessors Association (SAA), more than 120,000 people registered in the run up to the December 12 poll, making the final number of eligible Scots voters 4,053,140.

The figure shows the highest number of Scots registered to vote at a UK Parliament election in decades.

Of those registered, 728,148 have opted to cast their ballot via postal vote.

Pete Wildman, SAA secretary, said: "We are pleased to see an increase in the number of people registered to vote.

"All our teams have worked hard to process the increased number of applications ahead of the final update of the register."

There was concern about the number of people registered to vote ahead of the November 26 deadline, as according to the Electoral Commission one in six people were not on the register.

Young people and those who have recently moved house were the most likely to be incorrectly registered.
