SCHOOL children have teamed up with a tourism charity to create a William Wallace-themed reading challenge to inspire a new generation of book lovers.

The Reading Gives You Freedom project encourages participation in the First Minister’s Reading Challenge.

Pupils from Our Lady’s Primary School, Stirling, and Stirling District Tourism, the charity behind the National Wallace Monument, set youngsters the challenge of reading 246 books by World Book Day on March 5. The target represents the number of steps to the top of the monument.

Catherine Morrison, learning and volunteer co-ordinator at Stirling District Tourism said: “We understand the value of creating opportunities to engage with schools to inspire young people with Wallace’s story.

“It is part of our outreach programme designed to showcase one of our greatest national heroes to children from across Scotland.”

The challenge is tailored to various reading abilities.
