Murder in the Bush: Cold Case Hammarskjold - Storyville (BBC Four, 9pm)
THIS captivating, unusual and intriguing political documentary by Danish filmmaker Mads Brugger was the winner of the 2019 World Cinema Documentary Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival. It follows an investigation into the mysterious plane crash over Zambia in 1961 that killed idealistic United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold as he was attempting to negotiate a ceasefire in the Congo. With the case still unsolved 50 years later, Brugger and his sidekick Goran Bjorkdahl lead viewers down an investigative rabbit hole to unearth the truth.
Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas (C4, 5:30pm)
KIRSTIE Allsopp, aka the queen of crafting, is back with a fresh run of creative ideas. Each episode focuses on a tightly fought competition, bringing the best of UK craft from every part of the country to take part in a challenge for a handmade trophy. In the first episode, the Christmas HQ is bursting with festive crafters hoping to clinch victory in the best decorated tree competition.
Vienna Blood (BBC2, 9pm)
OSKAR is called away from Max and Clara’s engagement party to investigate the brutal murders of three women in a brothel. Clara understands Max’s eagerness to join the investigation and allows him to follow, much to the detective’s dismay. The police almost immediately arrest Victor Krull, a man who regularly visited the brothel and took a particular interest in one of the victims, whose body has been washed and ritualistically displayed. The press are informed of the arrest but Max is not at all convinced.
Chris Tarrant: Railways of the Somme (C5, 9pm)
NEW series. The broadcaster returns, beginning by travelling across Europe to examine the train’s role in the First World War. In Northumberland, he enjoys a ride on a preserved locomotive to find out how important the railways were for mobilising troops around the country.
