Gold Digger (BBC1, 9pm)

JULIA Ormond and Ben Barnes join forces for this promising six-part drama from Marnie Dickens, who cut her scriptwriting teeth on Hollyoaks, but gained more plaudits for creating Thirteen. Ormond plays Julia, a wealthy 60-year-old who has spent her entire life putting other people first, including her ex-husband Ted and their three children, high-achiever Patrick, self-destructive Della and baby of the bunch Leo. But she decides to prioritise her own happiness after falling for Benjamin, a man 24 years her junior (Barnes).

Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild (C5, 9pm)

THE presenter meets an inventor who has built a unique home for his family on a remote island off the coast of Panama. Fogle gets a taste of the unconventional family’s daily routine, which includes scrubbing boat hulls, getting some exercise in a pedalo, hacking through the island’s vegetation, and home schooling for the children. He also takes a look at some of his host’s inventions, which include a computer game depicting

his unusual life.

Rick Stein’s Secret France (BBC2, 9pm)

THE chef continues his “journey without maps”, leaving the main routes and tourist hotspots behind to embark on a road trip along picturesque backroads. Here, he heads through the eastern border regions of Alsace and Jura – home to his favourite French dish of choucroute garni and favourite French cheese, comte. He then begins to head inland, visiting Burgundy and the French/Swiss border.

The War Next Door: Scotland and the Troubles, BBC Scotland, 10pm

IN this new two-part series, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the start of The Troubles in Northern Ireland, the story of Scotland’s role in the conflict is told by people who were involved. Through archive footage, first-person testimony and commentary, this first episode charts how The Troubles exploded. The ties which bind Scotland and Northern Ireland are examined against a backdrop of violence and rioting on the streets of Belfast. When the British Government deploys troops, many of the soldiers are Scottish. At first, they are welcomed but the situation quickly deteriorates.
