SSE Renewables has appointed Nexans as the preferred supplier for the power cables for Scotland’s most significant construction project ever undertaken, Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm.

The announcement comes ahead of SSE Renewables’ Meet the Buyer events this week in Inverness, Aberdeen and Dundee to enable businesses to gear up to bid for contracts for Seagreen, a 1075MW Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm.

Nexans is the preferred Tier 1 contractor tasked with the delivery of three 65km offshore export cables and three 20Km onshore export cables that will be used to transport the clean, renewable energy generated at Seagreen onshore and onto the National Grid.

Seagreen project director John Hill said: “We are pleased to announce Nexans as our preferred supplier to design, supply and install the onshore and offshore export cable. Nexans is one of the world leaders in this field and this agreement is a major step forward for the Seagreen project.”

Located 27km off the Angus coast, Seagreen is a pioneering offshore wind project, capable of powering up to one million homes a year and would avoid around 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

The project secured a 15-year contract for 454MW at a strike price of £41.61/MWh in auction delivery year 2024/25. The contract represents 42% of the total project capacity although SSE Renewables is planning to build out the project to 1075MW capacity.
