A CANDLELIT vigil was held on the Buchanan Street Steps in Glasgow last night to remember the 39 people found dead in a lorry trailer in Essex.
Stand Up To Racism Scotland campaigners invited the public to pay their respects.
Eight women and 31 men were found in a refrigerated trailer in an industrial park last Wednesday. It is thought they were from Vietnam.
Last night’s tribute came after lorry driver Maurice Robinson, 25, who has been charged with 39 counts of manslaughter, appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court via video link.
He was not asked to indicate a plea and will appear at the Old Bailey next month. Making a statement to MPs, Home Secretary Priti Patel said work is under way to co-ordinate an international response to the “appalling” incident.
She later said Belgian authorities have agreed to the deployment of extra UK immigration enforcement officers at Zeebrugge.
