WORKERS at a BiFab yard in Lewis have been hit with redundancy notices just six months after the site was reopened.

The Arnish fabrication yard had been brought back into use in March to make parts for an offshore windfarm. More than 80 jobs were expected to be created by the contract and around 60 people are said to be working at the site.

But workers have now been served with six-week redundancy notices.

The Scottish Government has pledged to provide support for workers.

Unite and GMB Scotland said the news was “a major blow to the workers who have had to endure so much uncertainty over recent years”.

They added: “This latest development is part of a long-running and sorry saga regarding the abject failure of the Scottish and UK Governments to ensure working-class communities benefit from the so-called green revolution.”
