INDEPENDENCE marches attracted major crowds this year – but it hasn’t always been that way.

This picture from Jack and Elaine Paterson of Lochwinnoch was taken in 1974 when marches were attended by a far smaller core whose efforts have helped shape today’s politics.

The National and its sister title the Sunday National have run colourful photo spreads showing the action at recent events. Now we’re asking you to share your memories of independence events in days gone by.

Jack, who edits the SNP’s Independence Magazine, says he’s “hardly changed since those days, but the crowds have”. He is now preparing to stage the magazine’s annual St Andrew’s Awards Dinner in Glasgow in November, where the First Minister will be amongst speakers.
