Inside the Vatican (BBC2, 9pm)

A FILM crew gains exceptional access to the Vatican for a year to examine its inner workings. Cameras capture everyone including Pope Francis himself, his head of security, the nuns who cater for the homeless, the choristers of the Sistine Chapel, the papal gardener and the chief of the diplomatic corps to gain a unique and exclusive insight into the lives of those who live and work in this independent City State. The first of two programmes follows the build-up to Easter, when tens of thousands of pilgrims arrive and Pope Francis takes centre stage in the world’s biggest theatre of faith.

Secrets of the Royal Flight (C5, 9pm)

THE royal family’s methods of transport have been in the news recently with Prince Harry and his family apparently using private jets to get around more than he was originally claiming. However, flying in style is not a new concept for the royals, and this documentary lifts the curtain on five-star regal luxury at 30,000 ft. We find out how the King’s Flight was created in 1936 with Edward becoming Britain’s first reigning monarch to fly as both passenger and pilot. There is also footage of a young Queen jetting around the globe for the very first time, as well as tales from the next generation of royals promoting the Windsor brand worldwide. Finally, viewers get a peek inside the private world of royal life in the air, uncovering the mysterious traditions and protocols behind royal travel.

ON the day of Mrs Bookham’s funeral, a blazing row about the contents of the deceased’s handbag sees Lisa Marie storm out telling Geraldine she can “stick her job”. At the arcade Mike receives a visit from a disgruntled Tony Peroni who wants to call in his debt, while suspicions mounts about Bigsy’s involvement in Mr Ferris’s burglary.

Front Row Late (BBC Two, 11.05pm)

MARGARET Atwood is the author of more than 50 books of fiction, poetry and essays, including her 1985 classic The Handmaid’s Tale. In the first of a new series of the arts programme, Mary Beard talks to the 79-year-old writer about her career and previews Atwood’s new book, The Testaments, which is set 15 years after the final scene in The Handmaid’s Tale.
