FIRST Minister Nicola Sturgeon clashed with Piers Morgan during a heated exchange over independence on Good Morning Britian.

Sturgeon spoke about the suspension of the Westminster Parliament, but faced repeated interuptions from host Morgan.

Speaking on Brexit, Sturgeon said: "As someone who also voted remain in a country that heavily voted remain, after the vote I put out to Theresa May, at the time, a compromised proposal.

"Okay, let's have the UK leave the EU but let's stay in the single market and the customs union.

"Nobody really contemplated during that referendum, being dragged out of the single market and the customs union."

Interrupting, Morgan said: "But that's complete nonsense. Sorry, Nicola Sturgeon, I'm sorry, I'm not letting you get away with that.

"It is complete nonsense. The Prime Minister of this country, the week before the referendum, David Cameron made it crystal clear as the Prime Minister, the week before the referendum, be under no illusion he said, this is a once in a lifetime vote, there won't be another one and it will mean coming out of the single market.

"He couldn't have made it any clearer. Everybody knew when they voted, that if you voted to leave, we would be leaving.

"We weren't staying partly in, we were leaving. I knew that, why didn't you know that?"

Nicola Sturgeon replied saying: "Because I listened to people like Boris Johnson, staying in the single market.

"But the point I'm making, you're saying that there are remainers who were never reconciled to the vote.

"What I'm saying to you, and it is factually correct, is that people like me put forward potential compromised options and they were completely dismissed out of hand in favour of this hard-line interpretation of the vote that Theresa May and others wanted to pursue.

"That is the implications, the hard-line interpretations, the hard Brexit, now the possible no-deal Brexit and the consequences of that which are severe for people across the length and the breadth of the UK and in Scotland."

Morgan also raised the prospect of a future independence referendum, claiming that if Brexit was overturned, it would undermine a future poll on leaving the UK.

Sturgeon dismissed his claim, saying: "If we don't Brexit, the result of the referendum on Brexit in Scotland will be honoured, not ignored as I keep having to remind you 62% of people in Scotland didn't vote to leave."

She was then once again interrupted by Morgan while trying to make her point, with the ITV host exclaiming: "It doesn't matter you lost. You lost. Nicola Sturgeon, you lost and you won't accept defeat."

The First Minister hit back saying that her party won the EU referendum in Scotland before continuing to debate the matter.

Morgan did state at the end of the interview that it was always a pleasure to joust with her, to which she said it was a pleasure.
