THE First Minister has challenged Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson to have her MPs back efforts to prevent a No-Deal Brexit

Nicola Sturgeon encouraged Davidson, who last month said she would refuse to support a No-Deal Brexit, to act fast as Boris Johnson's plans to suspend parliament were revealed.

The Prime Minister is going to ask the queen to suspend parliament from September 10 and delay its official opening until October 14, it was revealed this morning. This would restrict time to get legislation aimed at stopped the UK leaving the EU without a deal through, and also make it difficult to get any kind of deal through at all.

With time now ticking to prevent a No-Deal scenario, Sturgeon urged the Scottish Tory leader to get her 13 MPs to get involved in the cross-party work to block it.

She tweeted: "Given her past statements opposing a no deal Brexit, it would be good to have confirmation from Ruth Davidson today that all Scots Tory MPs will back the cross party effort next week to stop it - and that they will also oppose Boris Johnson’s attempt to shut down Parliament."

Earlier, the First Minister said today will "go down in history as a dark one indeed for UK democracy".

Downing Street has denied the suspension has anything to do with Brexit. A source told journalist Laura Kuenssberg "this is about the NHS and violent crime, not Brexit, and the courts have no locus to interfere in a bog standard Queen's Speech process".
