MHAIRI Black has called on young Shetlanders to “make our voices heard” on Brexit and the big issues facing the islands.
The SNP MP spoke out ahead of a Holyrood by-election on Thursday in which the SNP are close to snatching a shock victory for the first time.
Black, the youngest-ever elected MP, has urged young people to get behind SNP candidate Tom Wills and promoted the party as Scotland’s strongest pro-Remain voice.
She said: “As a young person in politics, I know that it can sometimes be difficult to feel engaged and inspired by politicians. But Tom is different – he’s brought positivity and fun to this election, and has been the stand-out candidate.
“With the countdown to Brexit underway, and major challenges and decisions ahead, it is more important than ever that young people are given a say on their future.
“Politics affects every aspect of your life – your wages, your house, your education, your job, your future. That’s why it’s so vital that you get out and vote on Thursday.
“It is clear to me from travelling across Scotland talking to young people that they are among the most engaged, informed and enthusiastic voters. This election is a real chance for young people to make our voices heard. We believe that your opinion does matter, your voice should be heard and your vote will influence the future of Shetland.”

Wills believes Shetland can lead by example on tackling climate change, and is calling on Shetland Islands Council to follow other local authorities in declaring a climate emergency.
The SNP hopeful is seeking support from the Scottish Government for a new package of measures to cut travel costs for Shetlanders, including free travel for foot passengers on inter-island ferries.
Wills added: “We know that Brexit presents huge risks for young people – robbing them of opportunities to live, work and study abroad in countries all of Europe.
“I truly believe that the SNP is the party with the best policies and vision to stand up for Scotland’s young people. Just look at all the young campaigners we’ve had on the doors throughout this campaign.
“I passionately believe Shetland can become a global leader in the fight against climate change.
Having worked in the renewables industry for more than 10 years, I know that we can ignite a green jobs boom in the isles.”
