THE Lord Ashcroft poll which placed Yes in the lead for the first time since March 2017 was huge news covered by media all around the world. The poll, which said 52% of people now support independence (once undecideds were removed) even made the papers in Indonesia.
But it's always interesting to see how stories like these are represented here at home.
The majority of Scotland's newspapers, and Scottish editions of UK papers, have featured the story on their front pages – minus The Daily Star, the Scotsman and The Times.
Here's what each paper went for:
The Daily Mail
First up is the Scottish Daily Mail. The paper goes for the splash "PM's wake-up call on Union" and focuses on the fact this poll has come so soon into his premiership.
The Daily Express
Next, The Daily Express who have opted for a very similar splash to The Daily Mail. They've got "Boris gets a wake-up call over Union", also choosing to focus on the fact this poll has come very soon after Johnson became PM.
The Scottish Sun
The Scottish Sun has gone for "Boris Brexit plan boosts indy" and "Nic's BoJo bounce". Interestingly, The Scottish Sun calls the poll a "surge" for Yes while the Mail was keen to get "slim" majority in that subdeck.
The Daily Record
The Daily Record now, who've gone for the simple "Yes Prime Minister". They pull focus onto Sturgeon's comments that it would now be a "democratic outrage" for the PM to block indyref2, adding the poll has led her to pile pressure onto Johnson.
The Herald
The Herald's main splash comes from comments Sturgeon made during an Edinburgh Fringe appearance last night, during which she spoke about her pain and anguish over the Salmond situation. Meanwhile further down the page the paper runs with "majority of Scots now want to leave the UK since Johnson entered Number 10".
The I
On The I's front page, "Johnson boosts Scots support for independence" is front and centre.
The Telegraph
The Telegraph have opted to lead on Brexit and No Deal, but have featured a little on the poll further down the page. This story again focuses on the pressure Sturgeon is putting on Johnson, with the splash: "Sturgeon piles pressure on Johnson after poll shows most Scots support independence".
The Press and Journal
The North-Eastern paper chooses to focus on "Brexit fears" fuelling support for independence rather than Johnson. The splash reads: "Brexit fears fuel wave of support for independence".
The Courier
The regional paper features the poll in a small sidebar slot. The section reads: "Independence poll shows majority for Yes".
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
