HUNDREDS of local residents are to get a first-look at the blackcurrant harvest in all its glory as the Big Berry Bash comes to Perthshire.

Tomorrow blackcurrant growers George and Douglas McLaren will open their gates in Meigle and invite the public to pick their own blackcurrants.

Bankhead Of Kinloch is one of four farms growing blackcurrants in Scotland, which combined, produce 1.25k tonnes of blackcurrants each year for Ribena.

There will also be a free barbeque and garden games.

Douglas McLaren said: “People are always amazed to hear that 90% of Britain’s blackcurrant crop goes into making Ribena as not many people realise they’re grown right on their doorstep here in Meigle.”

“With hundreds of people signed up it’s expected to be a great day and we’re looking forward to showing people what we’ve been up to over the last 12 months. With any luck, we’ll also be able to spot some of the wildlife that now call our farm home.”
