A SCOTTISH band who won a competition to open the main stage at Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival next week have said they are “buzzing” about the opportunity.
Four-piece indie rockers Luna the Professor, from Wishaw, will be opening for the likes of Elbow, Lewis Capaldi and and Johnny Marr.
“It’s a big deal for us,” said 20-year-old lead singer Johnny Irwin. “They are all the people we are into so it is a massive honour and achievement.”
The band have played gigs as far afield as Liverpool and Newcastle – and have performed at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow twice – as well as Groove Cairngorm, but said this is their first big festival.
They decided to enter the competition after another gig was cancelled. “We thought we may as well try to win this and fortunately everyone in Wishaw voted for us and we got it,” said Irwin.
The band says their technique to win the competition mostly relied on Facebook – to the extent the platform blocked them for several days after identifying them as spam. Despite that, they won with a total of 1700 votes.
Belladrum Festival takes place at Belladrum Estate, near Beauly in Inverness-shire, next weekend. Headliners include Jess Glynne, Chvrches, Tom Odell, Glasvegas, The Coral, Hawkwind, Richard Thompson and Lucy Rose.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
