NICOLA Sturgeon's consolation to Scotland's National Women's team has won a "Golden Tweet" award.
Scotland dramatically crashed out of the World Cup after throwing away a three-goal lead against Argentina.
The First Minister said the team had "inspired our nation" and "done us proud".
Dear #SWNT - you’ve taken Scotland to our first World Cup in 21 years, scored our first ever goals in a women’s World Cup, and inspired our nation. I know how heartbroken you will feel right now, but hold your heads high - you’ve done us proud ❤️ #SCO
— Nicola Sturgeon (@NicolaSturgeon) 19 June 2019
Sturgeon was awarded in the celebrity category of the #GoldenTweet trophy awards.
Dara Nasr, managing director of Twitter UK, said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined the Women’s World Cup conversation and Tweeted around the tournament. It was by no means easy picking our winners but we think that these Tweets embody the fun, innovative and thoughtful tone that our platform is based around.
“It has been another great sporting tournament and I am proud at how both the English and Scottish teams have performed – both on the football pitch and on Twitter.”
Other winning tweets include a carnival atmosphere at Glastonbury following a Lionesses victory and ones from footballer Ellen White, the Lionesses and Gary Lineker.

Another semifinal loss for an English side in a World Cup, but heartbreaking as it is, @Lionesses you did us proud. Well played.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
