JO Swinson has struggled through an interview where she was grilled over her "hypocrisy" for wanting a People's Vote but not indyref2.

In an LBC interview, the LibDem leader hopeful was corrected by Iain Dale for saying the SNP have no mandate for a second independence referendum and that "most of the people" in Scotland want to stay in the UK.

When asked her opinion on independence, she said: "I want Scotland to stay in the United Kingdom along with most of my constituents and most of the people in Scotland."

But Dale challenged Swinson, saying the SNP, who have more MSPs than Swinson's party, were elected on a mandate on having another vote on Scottish independence.

"They [the SNP] have more of a mandate than your party does in Scotland", he told Swinson.

Swinson refuted whether they have a mandate, pointing out the SNP "did not win a majority" and are operating as a minority government.

"They have more of a mandate than your party in Scotland and they stood on the issue of having a second referendum," Dale hit back.

Swinson replied: "They lost MSPs [in 2017] so to suggest there's some sort of clammer in Scotland to have 'Indy Ref 2', it's entirely the opposite."

But Dale said there is growing support for Scottish independence according to opinon polls. In fact, a poll revealed in The National today revealed the majority of Scots who backed Remain in the EU referendum now back independence.

Responding to Dale saying "there seems to be a little bit of a shift, Swinson said "the SNP have actually lost seats in the Scottish Parliament and in the UK Parliament"

She added: "What people in Scotland want is they want Scotland in the UK, in the EU and to move on from this constitutional wrangling we've now had for, you know, the best part of seven years in Scotland and have a government focuses on making their lives better. It is only the Liberal Democrats that are arguing for that position."

But Dale told Swinson her party has "lost lots of seats in Scotland as well", saying there were 11 Scottish LibDem MPs but now there are only four.

Admitting the LibDems had "a pretty difficult election night in 2015 in Scotland and accross the UK", Swinson said the party went from one to four MEPs in 2017 and elected one MEP in the European Parliament elections in May.

Dale pointed out that the LibDems only have four MPs in Scotland and the SNP have 35, nine times more.

He said this means the SNP have "more of a mandate for their position than [the LibDems]".

Iain quizzed the MP on her views between the two referendums, asking Ms Swinson whether she thought it was "hypocritical" to want to repeat one but not the other.

He said: "How come you wish to deny the people of Scotland a second referendum on independence and yet you're so passionate about having a second referendum on Brexit? That's hypocritical isn't it?"

Swinson replied: "I'm not going to apologise for standing up for the things I believe in and for what most people in Scotland want, which is to keep in our place in the UK and the EU.

"Clearly the inconsistency is the SNP who on the one hand say they want us to be in the EU but for some reason working with our closest partners in the UK family of nations is not something they want."

Dale said the EU and the Union are different as the EU is an economic union as opposed to a political one.

"I'm not sure the two really work as a comparison", he said.
