ONE really nice aspect for me that comes predominately from my work with Scottish Women In Sport (SW/S) is that I receive invitations to attend some wonderful events and last week was no different. This was in the form of a kind invitation from Action for Children to attend their most recent sports dinner held in Glasgow – to my knowledge a first, as the main speaker was female.

They had Dame Kelly Holmes, double Olympic Gold medallist, as their main speaker. In front of a mixed, though largely male, audience. Kelly had a very open and honest chat with host Peter Martin and the audience were enthralled. Still fit and active, she helped the total raised to £80,000 by auctioning an opportunity for her to attend a running club and give them the benefit of her knowledge.

She finished the night, along with the rest of those attending, on the dance floor singing along to Loch Lomond.

It was great to have an opportunity to speak to Kelly as SW/S have invited representatives from the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust to present at our conference on August 21 this year. The trust work with 11- to 25-year-olds who are harder to engage both in education and the community and use the power of world class athletes to train and mentor young people to achieve their potential through their programmes.

We are looking at the power of sport and the current vibrant and much-needed sport for change agenda. Tickets are now available to reserve through Eventbrite.

Currently we have SAMH presenting on the impact of sport for mental health and Scottish Sports Futures on their ETC programme, Education Through Cashback, which works with sports and organisations to support those delivering sport and physical activity to young people across Scotland.

Further presenters will be added to the mix shortly, along with our sponsors for the day. So keep your eye on social media if this is of interest to you, as this year tickets will be limited to the first 80 to apply and I don’t want you to miss out.
