THE Tory leadership contenders set out some of their policy initiatives in a digital hustings last night.

Boris Johnson, the current front-runner in the race, announced he would deliver an Australian-style points-based immigration system if he becomes prime minister.

In the system, applicants are assessed and receive points based on their occupation, English language proficiency, educational qualifications and additionally the skills and qualifications of their spouse or partner.

The National:

Johnson said he wanted to rebuild the public's faith in the UK immigration and be "tougher on those who abuse our hospitality".

He added the chances of a no-deal Brexit were "a million-to-one against", and left open the option of suspending Parliament if MPs attempt to block a no-deal break from the EU.

Meanwhile, his rival Jeremy Hunt promised to write off tuition fee debt – but only for young entrepreneurs who start up new businesses and take on staff.

He said he is also writing to all national broadcasters urging them to stage live TV events next week scrutinising the two candidates before ballot papers go out to party members.

"I fear that Boris Johnson's plan is to run down the clock so that by the time any debate happens, the votes are already being counted," he said.
