Hunt responded: "I've got Welsh blood, Irish blood and spent two happy years of my childhood in Scotland. I will never allow our Union to be broken up."

During a visit to Peterhead at the weekend, the Tory MP said the same thing, adding that he is the prime minster Nicola Sturgeon "least wants".

Hunt's visit was not entirely popular with Scots after he tweeted that Scotland wants a third runway at heathrow.

The tweet, in which he provided no evidence for his claim, received 118 retweets but a whopping 3700 replies.

While in Aberdeenshire, the Foreign Secretary was also mocked for posing with fish and chips and a can of Irn-Bru.
