I ATTENDED the Spectrum Centre, Inverness, on Monday evening for the presentation by Dr Tim Rideout on the Scottish economy.

The topic was the creation of a Scottish Central Bank and Scottish currency. A very enlightening, optimistic and insightful case for the creation of a financial infrastructure in a post-independence Scotland was delivered.

This envisaged a country, standing on its own and free of fiscal constraint. The changeover, from sterling to a new Scottish currency was discussed and, using roleplay, clearly demonstrated.

Best observation – when the subject of Ian Blackford’s statement that a Scottish currency would shadow the pound – was: “Politicians aren’t economists.”

Wow, don’t we know that to be true!
