AFTERNOON BBC One dramas are usually light-hearted offerings but occasionally viewers are treated to something more serious. This new offering starring Hugo Speer should offer a welcome helping of grit to the usual post-lunch telly meringue. In episode one, a cruelly displayed corpse leads an elite murder investigation squad to questionable decisions and concern over a deeper mystery. Sharon Small, Bailey Patrick and Tori Allen-Martin also star.
The £1 Houses: Britain’s Cheapest Street, C4, 8.30pm
YOU might recall this series from February last year. Now it’s back for a second run, and the format is the same: Liverpool City Council are selling off derelict houses for £1 each, and first-time buyers must invest thousands of pounds to renovate a derelict property. They have 12 months to get the abode in shape or the council will take it back – with no compensation. There’s a catch-up with the folks who are now living in the £1 house neighbourhood, and we also see Debbie and Ste planning their dream kitchen.
The Unwanted: The Secret Windrush Files, BBC2, 9pm
DAVID Olusoga takes a look at covert government documents to reveal how the Windrush scandal and the hostile environment for black British immigrants has been seven decades in the making. Settled here legally since childhood, contributors Sarah O’Connor, Anthony Bryan and Judy Griffith were re-classified as illegal immigrants. They lost jobs, savings and their health because they were unable to show proof of their nationality status, and faced deportation back to countries they could barely remember.
Year of the Rabbit, C4, 10pm
TWO rival gangs of bodysnatchers are waging an all-out war for turf and bodies in the East End, so Wisbech sends Strauss and Mabel in to work undercover. Meanwhile, Rabbit finds himself ostracised from the case due to his age – these are youth gangs – and takes umbrage when he is sent to an old people’s home to investigate a spate of mysterious poisonings instead.
