THE number of alcohol-related emergency hospital admissions in Scotland has fallen by more than 17% since the SNP came to power in 2007.

New analysis from the Scottish Parliament’s Information Centre shows the total fell from 39,857 in 2007/08 to 32,997 in 2017/18. Emergency admissions to psychiatric hospitals dropped from 2117 in 2007/08 to 1337 in 2016/17.

Earlier this week, NHS research showed alcohol sales had dropped by 3% since minimum unit alcohol pricing was introduced last year.

The volume of alcohol sold per adult in Scotland is now at its lowest level since 1994.

MSP Emma Harper MSP: “It’s abundantly clear that the SNP Government’s approach to improving Scotland’s public health is working.

"We will keep working hard to tackle alcohol misuse in Scotland and with a range of progressive initiatives in place, we must ensure we make further progress.”
