A TORY has come under fire for saying he would get down on his knees and beg for Scotland to stay in the UK.

The statement on the LBC radio show prompted presenter Shelagh Fogarty to ask the Conservative Party member: "Where's your self respect?"

The statement follows a new poll that revealed Conservative Party members would be prepared to break up the UK if it means leaving the EU.

The YouGov poll also found they would be prepared to remain in the EU if it meant keeping Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn out of 10 Downing Street.

The findings came as a blow to Ruth Davidson's party, showing how little the Tory party membership really care about the "precious Union".

The LBC caller Regan, who is a member of the Scottish Tories, admitted he would "get down on my hands and knees" if it meant keeping Scotland in the Union.

Presenter Shelagh Fogarty questioned the Tory's logic, responding: "But your party membership is putting you into a position on your knees begging, where's your self respect?

"Whether its anger or frustration, if Jeremy Corbyn was saying those things, you would call him the marxist revolutionary you say he is, but your own party members are saying it."

Twitter users hit out at the man's comment, saying it urging him to "wake up from this stupor" and commenting on his lack of "self respect".

WG Saraband pointed out the hypocrisy of the statment, saying: "A Scottish unionist "begging" his own side to keep Scotland as part of the UK. Literally begging, in the face of recent evidence that his pals in England would ditch Scotland right now. I hope he one day wakes up from this stupor and sees reason."

When the YouGov poll was released a spokesman for the Scottish Tories warned party members against "turn[ing] their backs on the UK".

“Conservative members need to remember ours is a party of the whole UK. It’s in the name. If Scotland becomes independent, there is no UK.

"No matter how badly people want Brexit, no Conservative and Unionist member should be prepared to turn their back on the UK.”
