THE Scottish Tories have responded to a poll that revealed a majority of UK Conservative members would sacrifice the Union to secure Brexit.
The findings came as a blow to Ruth Davidson's party, showing how little the Tory party membership really care about the "precious Union".
YouGov's poll found that a majority of Tory members (63%) would want Brexit even if it meant Scotland leaving the UK.
Asked about other possible sacrifices for leaving the EU, 61% would accept significant damage to the UK economy, 59% were willing to see Northern Ireland leave the UK and 54% would accept the demise of the Tory party.
Only the prospect of Jeremy Corbyn as prime minister saw a majority say they would be willing to give up on Brexit.
The poll also found that 26% of Tories would be "happy" with Scotland leaving the Union – regardless of Brexit.
The Scottish Tories took aim at the party's own members in their response to the findings.
Their spokesperson said: “Conservative members need to remember ours is a party of the whole UK. It’s in the name. If Scotland becomes independent, there is no UK.
"No matter how badly people want Brexit, no Conservative and Unionist member should be prepared to turn their back on the UK.”
As well as the 26% of Tories who were happy to see Scotland go, a further 20% felt the same way about Northern Ireland.
The poll also found that 46% of Tory members would be happy with Nigel Farage as their party leader.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
