KILLING EVE

Season two of the critically acclaimed drama (season one is available to stream on iPlayer),

What’s it about? Eve is an MI5 agent dissatisfied with her desk job. After pining a string of murders in Europe to the notorious assassin Villanelle, she ends up on the case to hunt her down.

What’s different this season? Details are murky. What we do know is that it picks up right where season 1 left off and will continue to follow Eve and Villanelle’s relationship.

When can I watch it? The first episode aired last Saturday and the following episodes will air on a week by week basis. Or the full season is on iPlayer.

Why will I like it? Akin to the likes of BBC’s Bodyguard, Killing Eve follows the lives of MI5 agent Eve. It’s a change from your regular police drama being a violent, stylish female-led show.

Who’s in it? Jodie Comer as Villanelle, who you may recognise from her role as Kate in Doctor Foster. Sandra Oh is another famous face, best known for her role in Grey’s Anatomy.

Don’t just take my word for it... The first episode of season two raked in 3.5 million viewers on BBC One, making it the most watched show across all channels on Saturday night.

BIG LITTLE LIES

Another show returning for its second season, we head back to Monterey, California for the second instalment of Big Little Lies.

What’s it about? The show follows five different mums living in Monterey, California and the problems they face. It explores lies, friendships, marriages and parenting.

What’s season 2 about? After the reveal at the end of season one (I won’t give anything away), the new series will explore the fallout and impact on the lives of the so-called Monterey Five. While the first season was about keeping secrets, the second season will explore what happens when those secrets begin to unravel.

Who’s in it? I think the better question is who’s not in it? A star-studded cast, with big names like Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern. If that doesn’t convince you, perhaps the addition of Meryl Streep in season two will.

Why should I watch it? Did you not read above? Meryl Streep is in it!

Why shouldn’t I watch it? Perhaps give this one a miss if you could do without the desire to remodel your entire kitchen (seriously, their kitchens are something else).

When can I watch it? The first episode aired on Sky Atlantic last Monday, the rest will follow weekly. You can also catch up with season one and the beginning of season two on demand.

What do I watch next? Already finished season one and are enduring the week-long wait until the next episode? Why not check out another unmissable Sky Atlantic show, Sharp Objects (starring Amy Adams).

STRANGER THINGS

This summer welcomes the third, highly anticipated instalment of Netflix’s fan favourite Stranger Things.

What’s it about? Set in the 80s, the sci-fi show follows a group of soon-to-be teenagers in Hawkins, Indiana. Battling various creatures and monsters from ‘The Upside Down’.

What’s new for this season? The creators are aiming for something closer to traditional horror this season. Featuring a new beast, some kind of infection from ‘The Upside Down’ and an array of new characters, the third season is sure to live up to expectations.

Who’s in it? The main cast are all set to return for the next season. Featuring young star Millie Bobby Brown (who, it’s hard to believe, was only 11 in the first season) and Winona Ryder (known for her roles in Heathers and Girl, Interrupted).

Why should I watch it? For a hearty does of 80s nostalgia. Creators of the show have acknowledged that Back to the Future will play a big part in this new season.

When can I watch it? All episodes will be available to stream on Netflix from July 4, plenty of time to get yourself caught up on the first two seasons before then.

GLOW

Another new season of a Netflix original show, season three of Glow will be available on the streaming service this summer

What’s it about? Inspired by the 1986 series GLOW: Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling and the 2012 documentary GLOW: The Story of The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. The show is about, you guessed it, a group of female wrestlers in Los Angeles in the 1980s.

What’s the new season about? Although no major plot details have been revealed, this season will follow the GLOW ladies as they head to Las Vegas and explore more of the characters' personal lives, spending time away from the ring.

Who’s in it? All of the main cast are due to return. This includes Alison Brie who trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.

Why should I watch it? This summer is all about female sport, so once the Women’s World Cup is over, why not give a show about female wrestling a watch?

Why shouldn’t I watch it? Definitely avoid if you don’t like leotards.

BLACK MIRROR

Season 5 of fan favourite Black Mirror.

What’s it about? If you somehow haven’t heard of Black Mirror, allow me to explain. It’s an anthology series created by Charlie Brooker focusing on technology and the ways in which it can go horribly wrong. It’s completely different to your average British-born show

Why’s it different? Firstly, it’s an anthology so each episode is different – different story, different actors, different characters. The show is also littered with Easter Eggs and subtle references to previous episodes, leading many viewers to theorise that all the episodes take place in one big Black Mirror universe

Why should I watch it? It’s full of great actors. The latest season features Andrew Scott (best known for his role as Moriarty in Sherlock) and pop sensation Miley Cyrus. Previous seasons have seen the likes of Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker and The Theory of Everything’s Maxine Peak.

When can I watch it? With the new season airing at the beginning of the month, all episodes are available to stream on Netflix

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK

The 7th and final season of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black (OITNB) hits Netflix in July.

What’s it about? OITNB follows inmates at Litchfield Penitentiary in Connecticut after Piper Chapman, who has never been in trouble before, is sentenced to prison on a 10-year old drug charge.

What’s new this season? OITNB has never shied away from discussing hard hitting issues. Season 7 will, among other issues, explore the racial imbalance in the American judiciary system following the devastating end to season 6

Is it true? The show is based on the memoirs of Piper Kerman, the real-life Piper Chapman, about her time in prison.

Why should I watch it? With 6 seasons (and soon to be 7), each with 13 episodes, it’s the perfect show to binge watch.

When can I watch it? Season 7 will be available to stream from July 26.

CHERNOBYL

Chernobyl is a Sky Atlantic show based on the devastating 1986 explosion at Chernobyl.

What’s it about? Taking the form of a mini-series, Chernobyl follows the stories of the men, and one woman, who tried to contain the disaster and those who gave their lives to prevent it from worsening.

Who’s in it? Paul Ritter, known for his slightly cheerier performance in Friday Night Dinner; Jared Harris who has appeared in shows like Mad Men and The Crown and Oscar nominee Emily Watson.

How accurate is it? The programme-makers say it is as accurate as possible, although Emily Watson’s character is said to be an amalgamation of several different scientists and it’s unclear if any of them were really women. The Russians disagree and the Russian government has announced that they will be making their own version of the show to tell everyone what really happened.

Why should I watch it? Not only is it a chance to learn about the sheer scale and frightening implications of Chernobyl, everyone is talking about it. So much so, it’s also beaten Game of Thrones to become the highest rated show on IMDB.

Why shouldn’t I watch it? If you suffer from pogonophobia, Chernobyl may not be the show for you.

When can I watch it? Although the final episode aired in the UK on Tuesday, all episodes are on demand.

THE HANDMAID’S TALE

Season three of Channel 4’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

What’s it about? Set in a dystopian future where women’s reproductive rights are restricted (so perhaps not so futuristic after all), the show follows Jane after she is caught trying to escape. She is renamed Offred and is sent to bear children for government officials.

Who’s in it? Protagonist Offred is played by Elisabeth Moss who appeared in BBC show Top of the Lake. Alexis Bledel, best known for her lighter role as Rory in Gilmour Girls, also stars.

Could it ever come true? Although based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, she has stated that everything in it is based on events that have already happened somewhere in history… which is only slightly terrifying.

Why will I like it? If you were a fan of Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle, you will be sure to enjoy The Handmaid’s Tale

Why should I watch it? It was the first show from a streaming service (Hulu) to win best drama at the Emmys.

When can I watch it? The previous two seasons are available on demand. Season three began on June 9 and will continue every Sunday on Channel Four, with the episodes also available on demand.

THE CONFESSION TAPES

The second season of this Netflix original.

What’s it about? The docu-series examines the police questioning methods used in America. It looks into cases in which innocent people have claimed to have been forced into false confessions.

What’s the new season about? Although there was a lot of debate surrounding a second series – whether they would actually be able to make one – Netflix have managed to find another string of cases to examine over the 7-episode season.

Who’s in it? Because it’s a documentary, there are no actors. Those who are in the show are the real people affected by the cases: the accused and their family and the victim’s family.

Why will I like it? If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries like Making a Murderer, The Confession Tapes should be right up your street.

What else can I watch? Because there’s only 7 episodes available on Netflix, other crime documentaries like The Staircase and The Ted Bundy Tapes should tide you over until the next season comes out.

Why should I watch it? Even for those who aren’t a fan of murder documentaries, the confession tapes focuses more on the American justice system than on the crimes themselves.

When can I watch it? The next 7 episodes will be available to watch on Netflix from Friday July 21.

THE BOLD TYPE

Third series of Amazon Prime original.

What is it about? Based on the life of Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles, offering a glimpse into the lives of those responsible for a global fashion magazine

Who’s in it? Lesser known actors than the likes of those in Big Little Lies. The most well-known of the bunch is Melora Hardin, you may have seen her in 17 again, the US Office as Michael Scott's girlfriend or 27 Dresses.

Why should I watch it? If you like fashion and seeing women in charge, this one’s for you.

When can I watch it? The final episode of season 3 premiered on Amazon Prime this week, all episodes from all three seasons are available to stream.
