WITH only a few words, Lorraine Kelly's contribution to the Tory leadership race is perhaps the most brutal yet.
That may not be a sentence you were expecting to read today, but the contest is so farcical that we probably shouldn't be surprised.
Esther McVey was appearing on Good Morning Britain in her capacity as a Tory MP bidding to replace Theresa May as PM and party leader.
It all went relatively smoothly enough for her – though that bar has been set fairly low, admittedly.
Enter Lorraine Kelly, who used to work with McVey when the MP was a journalist.
Linking to a promo of what was coming next, presenter Susanna Reid asked Kelly: "Do you remember Esther McVey from her GMTV days?"
With a look that could kill, she replied: "Yep. Yes I do. Okay, coming up after half past..."
After the reel, Piers Morgan asked: "So you got on with Esther then, Lorraine?"
Almost keeping a straight face, she said: "I don't remember, love. I don't remember at all. It was an awful long time ago."
Words can't really capture the absolutely savage delivery from Kelly.
this longer version of that Lorraine Kelly/Esther McVey clip might be the most brutal thing I've ever witnessed pic.twitter.com/B8NTPes6uT

McVey will be wishing she'd brought along her portrait of Margaret Thatcher to deflect some of the attention – instead, social media has been eating up the clip.
It’s good to know that people who know her personally, from before she went into politics, also hate her. It just confirms what everyone else is thinking.

Probably the most informative information @piersmorgan has ever extracted from someone.

The fact that Lorraine Kelly saved £1.2m pretending to be ‘Lorraine Kelly’ but can’t pretend to like Esther McVey is sublime https://t.co/KWzglswMPR

I suddenly have a newfound respect for Lorraine Kelly. I think 'I don't remember her' just might be the new 'I don't know her' after today. https://t.co/L4tCoBpK2S

So now we know where the performance artist “Lorraine Kelly” stops and real Lorraine Kelly begins... https://t.co/BjuiXackgM

We only wish we could have seen McVey's reaction...
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
