A SCOTTISH researcher who works at a prestigious university in Canada has published an ebook to help people with diabetes control their blood sugar levels.

Stewart McLennan, 26, from Aberdeen, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes six years ago.

He is currently a PhD bioengineering researcher at McGill University, Montreal.

In his book, published to coincide with Diabetes Awareness Week, McLennan shares tips with fellow insulin-dependent diabetics for maintaining a blood glucose level close to the range of a non-diabetic, based on the research he has carried out on the condition.

He said: “When I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 20, it was a bitter pill to swallow.

“Like most people post-diagnosis, I was concerned about lifestyle changes and how the disease would limit me.

“The support I received from health service professionals

was and continues to be invaluable in managing this lifelong condition, and it’s great that Diabetes UK is running this awareness week to provide further support to the community.

“This ebook is not intended to address all available advice for people with diabetes in particular those who have additional health needs, or, to replace the advice given by healthcare professionals.

“However, it gives all insulin-dependent people with diabetes useful tips as well as further detail on controlling their blood glucose levels hopefully close to the range of a non-diabetic.”

The ebook has been designed as a reference for everyday situations a person with diabetes may find themselves in – from blood glucose monitoring and insulin administration to diet plan, and treating hypos.

Further sections include controlling diabetes when exercising, enjoying a meal or nights out and even going through airport security.

The ebook is being sold at a 20% discounted rate of £8. It is available on Kindle Direct Publishing on Amazon.
