EIGHT gardens across Fife open their gates this week as part of Scotland’s Gardens Scheme’s Fife Summer Trail, including Glenbeg in Cupar, Straiton Farmhouse in Balmullo and Millfield House in Falkland where visitors can enjoy walks among meadows dotted with bright bulbs and cherry trees.

Gardens can be visited individually for £5, with proceeds going to the scheme’s beneficiary charities, the Rotary Club of St Andrews’ Arclight Eye Project and East Neuk First Responders.

Accompanied children go free and a £25 ticket via scotlandsgardens.org covers all eight gardens.

The Tower
1 Northview Terrace, Wormit

Situated four miles south of Dundee, Peter and Angela Davey’s one-acre Edwardian landscaped garden enjoys impressive views over the River Tay.

They’ve recently removed a number of rhododendrons to create more space for seating and flower beds, allowing you to take a breather between hillside walks around ponds and planted rockeries and along original woodland paths which lead to a granite grotto and waterfall.

At the house’s rear the vegetable garden features raised beds made from granite setts, traditionally used for paving roads.

June 3 and 10, 4pm to 8pm and by arrangement until September 30. Tel: 01382 541635.

Gordonshall Farm
Carnbee, Anstruther

After suffering years of neglect, the Georgian farmhouse’s gardens have been transformed into productive, pleasant spaces by Mihai and Louisa Cocris.

With views of the River Forth and East Neuk coastline, the self-catering cottage features a half-acre Victorian walled garden with vegetable beds, a raised hexagonal pond landscaped by Fife-based designer Michael Innes and much to please the eye such as generous amounts of lilac, antirrhinums and hostas.

June 5 and 12, 10am to 4pm.

Kenly Green Farm
Boarhills, near St Andrews

Offering colourful herbaceous borders and a luxurious lawn, the garden at Kenly Green Farm is one of eight village gardens to open to the public this month.

Kenly Green Farm is open for two additional days before as part of the Fife Summer Trail, with the mixed cottage gardens of The Dirdale and Numbers 2 and 5 Old Edinburgh open on June 30. Others to feature include the hidden garden of Byways, The Cottage, Sea View and No 1 Old Edinburgh, which boasts attractive ranges of herbs and shrubs.

Greenhead of Arnot
Leslie, Glenrothes

Lively colour contrasts with a more formal, symmetrical layout at Malcolm and Maggie Strang Steel’s farmhouse B&B, which dates back to the 1840s.

Situated on the border of Fife and Kinross-shire on the south slopes of the Lomond Hills, the farmhouse is surrounded by 590 acres of farmland and woodland, and is near the reservoir home of a variety of bird life.

Wormistoune House
Crail

Baron and Lady Wormiston continue to restore the 17th century tower house and its gardens, which in recent years under head gardener Katherine Taylor has seen the planting of extensive wildflower meadows.

In the walled garden, clipped yew hedges form garden “rooms” – home to herbaceous borders, a productive potager garden and a shade garden for four of Scotland’s largest Griselinia littoralis specimens.

June 6 and 13, 10am to 4pm.
