THE daughter of former US attorney general Robert Kennedy will be one of the key speakers at a new conference on climate change being held in Glasgow.
The first World Forum on Climate Justice will take place in the city place from June 19-21. Human rights campaigner Kerry Kennedy (pictured right) and former Irish president Mary Robinson will be among those taking part. The event has been organised by the Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) Centre for Climate Justice together with global analytics firm Elsevier, and will look at how societies and economies will be affected by changing weather patterns. As part of this it will consider the impact of climate change on weather forecasting, people trafficking and the growing spread of mosquito-borne malaria.
Another key focus will be how new technology can be best used to protect the poorest and most vulnerable communities from the damage that could be caused.
Kennedy, who is president of the Robert F Kennedy Human Rights organisation, and Robinson, who established a climate justice foundation, will speak at the event, which we include an address from Met Office chief executive Penelope Endersby.
Professor Tahseen Jafry, the conference chair and director of GCU’s Centre for Climate Justice, said: “We cannot place our faith in future technologies to fix this problem. Addressing this widening disparity and the resulting climate injustice requires a concerted, collaborative effort across disciplines and I believe this forum will help deliver that. I am excited to bring together so many leading researchers from the international scientific community and NGOs. We have been overwhelmed by the interest in this new event and it will be an important platform for fostering collaboration, networking and wider engagement in climate justice.”
