Mar Lodge Estate is to be the scene of a project aimed at preserving some of Scotland’s most important woodlands.
In March the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) received £125,000 from the People’s Postcode Lottery for the Woodlands for Wildlife Project on the Mar Lodge Estate National Nature Reserve.
Yesterday NTS announced that they will start the project this autumn, with the Trust’s expert conservation team at the UK’s biggest nature reserve carrying out a range of important work to look after woodland, particularly their efforts to revive Caledonian Pine.
They will also focus efforts on protecting montane willow, twinflower and green shield moss – species which are important for the health of the reserve’s woodland and the insects, birds and animals that thrive there.
David Frew, Operations Manager at Mar Lodge Estate said: “Players of the People’s Postcode Lottery have once again supported the National Trust for Scotland’s work in protecting Scotland’s nature and wildlife. This funding will enable us to carry out vital work to care for these natural treasures.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
