RESIDENTS in Oban took to the streets today to celebrate the town's debut Pride event.

The weekend-long Pride event, which has been organised with help from a series of community fundraisers, began on Friday and concludes tomorrow.

The Pride Parade – the focal point of the celebration – took place this afternoon and saw the community march from Oban Station Square to Markie Dans.

Over the weekend an array of events are taking place, including a free family Pride event, a "rainbow ball", and a screening of classic film Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Despite the light drizzle, Constitutional Relations Secretary and local MSP Mike Russell joined in the celebrations along with Equalities Minister Christina McKelvie.

Russell posted a photo of his soggy feet on Twitter after taking part in the parade, but said the nasty weather wasn't "enough to dampen the spirits" at the march.

Last night, McCaig's Tower was lit up with the colours of the LGBT flag to mark the weekend.

Businesses in the town have also been showing the support for the event with LGBT-themed displays in their windows.
