IT is always a delight to report on the establishment of a new Yes group and the latest is gearing up for its official launch in Renfrewshire on Saturday.

Renfrew Women for Independence will officially come into being at the Methodist Central Halls in Paisley, with an event featuring Dr Philippa Whitford, the SNP MP who has been much in demand by the Yes movement in recent times.

The SNP’s health spokesperson in the House of Commons will be speaking about the impact Brexit is going to have on the NHS, and the alternatives to this.

Renfrew Women for Independence (WFI) told us: “Dr Whitford will speak from her vast experience both as a surgeon and as an MP, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions about the topic as well as about Scottish independence.”

Caroline McDonald of Renfrew WFI’s said “We are proud to have Dr Philippa Whitford MP speaking at our first event. Brexit is a worrying prospect for many and there has been no real information on the significant impact it will have on public services like the NHS, which we all rely on.

“Dr Philippa Whitford’s passion and knowledge are hugely respected and we are sure people will enjoy hearing from her and being able to ask her questions. We are delighted also to have support from our Paisley WFI sisters as we launch.”

Renfrew WFI say they are keen to interact with as many women in Renfrew and the surrounding areas as possible.

McDonald explained: “We have been holding street stalls across the area which have been well received, and we are planning future events that allow women to engage with politics is a safe and relaxed environment.”

Paisley WFI are looking forward to having the new group as neighbours. They said: “Brexit is going to have a profound impact on the NHS and this event will provide a platform for women from all political persuasions to discuss and learn about what – and how these changes are going to affect their lives.

“Although Paisley WFI are a diverse bunch, we all believe in a healthcare system based on need, rather than the ability to pay for it. Brexit – and how it’s going to impact the NHS – challenges that belief. We hope this event will give us some more answers.”

Brexit And The NHS With Dr Philippa Whitford is a women-only event. Refreshments will be provided and the event is free of charge. Children are welcome, and Renfrew and Paisley WFI groups say they are looking forward to seeing many new faces.

Tickets can be booked on the Eventbrite website, which is proving such a boon for the Yes movement.
