Queen Victoria: My Musical Britain, BBC2, 9pm
ON May 24, it will be 200 years since Queen Victoria’s birth and historian Dr Lucy Worsley is doing her bit to mark the event. Not only is she presenting the Radio 4 series Encounters with Victoria, she also hosts this documentary which explores the monarch’s character and legacy through music. Worsley will look at how the queen used music to transform the monarchy from a political power into a cultural force that aimed to unite the United Kingdom and Ireland during a time of great upheaval – and cement its power. The historian also explores the role music played in Victoria’s life, and there will be performances from Sir Willard White, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Black Dyke Brass Band.

Bradley Walsh’s Late Night Guest List, STV, 9.15pm
DO you remember The Nightly Show, STV’s attempt to launch a new chat show with a different guest host each week? It seems few people do, but while that format got a mixed response, Bradley Walsh’s stint in charge clearly convinced the viewers and STV that he is just as adept at rubbing shoulders with celebrities after the watershed as he is at asking members of the public questions at tea time on The Chase. So, he has been given the reigns for this new one-off show, in which he’s joined by celebs for a variety of games.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
