A SONG in support of the Scotland team in the Women’s World Cup football finals in France has been launched. Singer Lynnie Carson has teamed up with musicians including Horse to release Allez L’Ecosse in support of the players.
It was given its first public performance at a family fun event in Glasgow yesterday hosted by River City star Lesley Hart. Performing alongside Carson and Horse in the song are Monica Queen of Thrum, Unoma Okudo and Ross Hamilton of Bad Mannequins.
It was given the thumbs up from the audience at the launch at St Luke’s in Glasgow. With lines like “Shelley’s Tartan Army is on its way” and “we will silence all the naysayers” the song is an upbeat reminder of the Scotland women’s team’s achievements.
France 2019 will be Scotland’s first appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The closest the Scots had previously come was in 2015, when they lost out to the Netherlands in the semi-finals of the UEFA play-offs.
Shelley Kerr’s side secured their place in history on a dramatic final day of qualifying. The Scots and their opponents, Switzerland, had proved almost impossible to separate prior to that point, each having beaten the other by a one-goal margin at home and secured maximum points against their other Group 2 opponents.
Switzerland’s goalless draw in Poland allowed Scotland to take top spot with a wildly-celebrated 2-1 win away to Albania.
It was also remarked that, in hindsight, the key moment had arrived three months earlier, when Kerr’s team scored three times in the final 12 minutes away to Poland to turn a 2-0 deficit into a priceless 3-2 win.
Of their seven victories en route to France 2019, four involved Scotland coming from behind to take the points. Kerr’s comeback queens also proved expert at eking out narrow victories, winning five of their matches by a one-goal margin.
