A RECYCLING specialist in Dumbarton has been recognised for its innovation with a prestigious award.

Thompson Recycling and Landfill Ltd, a waste, recycling and aggregate supplier which serves Dumbarton, Glasgow and Lanarkshire, received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for its approach to sustainability.

The firm, which was set up five years ago as a subsidiary of the Thompson Quarries Group, was originally launched to address industry challenges.

These issues included increasing costs of aggregates in the construction sector, the reduction in landfill resources and a growing amount of regulation within the industry.

The company says through heavy investment and sustainability research, Thompson Recycling has created a successful business model to deal with the challenges.

Andrew Thompson, managing director, said: “Winning this award is a testament to the people within our company who have worked incredibly hard to achieve our goals.

“Sustainability is so important for us and our customers. Currently we offer an unparalleled service. We hope our work sets a precedent for others in the industry and alters the perception of the ability to find valid, sustainable and cost-effective recycling solutions across all sectors.

“We’re constantly working to enhance our facility and improve our environmental sustainability as we look to the future.”

The company’s award success follows a strong 2018, during which it hit its target of zero waste to landfill, achieving a 100% recycling rate of inert soil and construction waste.

The winners of the annual Queen’s Award for Enterprise were announced yesterday, with more than 200 companies making the prestigious list.

The award categories recognise companies who excel in international trade, innovation, sustainable development and promoting opportunity.

Eight Scottish firms won the accolade this year, and will be invited to a royal reception to officially receive the award.

UK Business Secretary Greg Clark said he was “extremely impressed to see such a wealth of talent and innovation” awarded this year.
