UNIONS have urged employers and the Scottish Government to better support migrant workers ahead of Brexit.

Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) general secretary Grahame Smith called for improvements to migrants’ working lives in Scotland including increased wages for all workers in sectors reliant on migrants such as care and hospitality.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon last week wrote an open letter to EU citizens in Scotland, stressing they are “welcome here” and play a “crucial role” in Scotland’s economy.

Smith said: “Much has been done to promote Scotland as a ‘welcoming’ country for migrants, but we need to do more. The STUC has found that while there is consensus on the need to attract migrants to Scotland, employers need to step up for staff facing hostility in the workplace and uncertainty ahead of Brexit.”
