GAME of Thrones characters played by Scottish actors are likely to survive to the end of the new season, according to a new algorithm.

Students at the Technical University of Munich in Germany have developed an application that scours the internet for data on the hit fantasy series and uses an algorithm to predict which characters are most likely to survive in season eight.

According to the results, the chances of survival of Sandor Clegane and Jorah Mormont, who are played by Scottish actors Rory McCann and Iain Glen, were 52% and 72% respectively.

Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke, pictured top) has the highest chance of survival at 99%. Her Hand of the Queen, Tyrion Lannister, also has a promising 97% survival rate. Bronn is the most likely to die next with a 6% chance of survival.

The National:

Guy Yachdav, who supervised the project at the university, said survival rates are predicted using longevity analysis similar to scientific studies used to examine the effects of medical treatments.

He said although the analysis “relies on data taken from the world of fantasy, the exact same artificial intelligence techniques are used in the real world”.

Savvy fans of the show can get an in-depth look into the main reasons for the algorithm’s predictions. For instance, being born in Winterfell to the House of Stark as well as only being married once seems to increase the chances of Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) being eliminated in the upcoming season – her predicted likelihood of death is 73%.

Separate Press Association research found Arya Stark, played by Maisie Williams, spends more time killing individuals (two minutes and 25 seconds) and mass murdering (one minute) than any other character in the first seven seasons of the hit show.

However, it is Jon Snow (Kit Harington, pictured top who spends the most screen time (13 minutes and nine seconds) committing acts of violence, including 15 seconds murdering, seven minutes and 41 seconds involved in duels, and four minutes and 52 seconds involved in battles or brawls.

He is followed by Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), who spends 10 minutes and nine seconds over the seven series involved in acts of violence, including six minutes and 50 seconds duelling, and three minutes seven seconds in battles or brawls.

The show has often come under fire for its levels of violence and nudity and research shows there has been a significant swing in the proportions of both as the show has gone on.

In the first episodes the amount of on-screen nudity far outweighed the time spent showing scenes of violence – two minutes and 46 seconds against 36 seconds in the first episode of series one – but by the third series the balance largely shifted – 32 minutes and 35 seconds against 30 minutes and 15 seconds in the third episode. This created a cumulative total of one hour, 16 minutes and 31 seconds of nudity throughout the seven series and three hours, nine minutes and 35 seconds of violence.
