THE leader of the Scottish Tories may soon be facing a challenge from one of the biggest names in the SNP.
It has been reported that Angus Robertson, the former Wesminster SNP leader, may run against Ruth Davidson in her Edinburgh Central constituency seat for the Holyrood parliament.
Robertson lost his Westminster constituency to Tory MP Douglas Ross in 2017, and since then has set up the Progress Scotland research group, which works to promote the case for Scottish independence.
He told the Sunday Times, which reported the claims: “While it is an honour to be linked by others to the constituency, the nomination process has not even started.
“I am totally focused on my work with my new venture Progress Scotland, and to the challenges of impending parenthood.”
Davidson has held the seat since 2016, though the return of political heavyweight Robertson could turn Edinburgh Central into one of the key battlegrounds of the 2021 Scottish Parliament elections.
It is rumoured that former Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale is also considering running in the constituency.
A Scottish Tory source said: “Earlier this year the MEP Alyn Smith was being lined up to take on Ruth. Now apparently it’s Angus Robertson.
“Who next? On behalf of the great city of Edinburgh, the Scottish Conservatives welcome them all.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
