"WE'LL leave the light on so you can find your way home" and "please stay with us in Europe" are some of the messages French people have sent to Scots on Twitter.

In a tweet Scottish Government-backed Scotland Is Now said: "Hey Europe, we think a lot about you... our common history, our holidays together and the warm welcome you constantly give us. Scotland is open to you. Share your message or photo expressing what you want to say to Scotland."

The tweet was accompanied by a link saying "chère Europe, vous comptez toujours autant pour nous" (dear Europe, you can always count on us).

And thousands of French people spoke of "la gentillesse des écossais" (the kindness of Scots) saying it is "un paradis" (a paradise) with "magnifiques paysages au son de la cornemuse" (beautiful landscapes to the sound of bagpipes).
