THE cast of the hit sitcom Derry Girls have become involved in the Brexit debate – thanks to a tweet from Mhairi Black.

As protestors continued to make their presence felt in Parliament Square, MPs inside the House of Commons could hear the flute bands marching outside.

Responding, the SNP’s Mhairi Black shared a gif taken from the Bafta-nominated Channel 4 show, which follows the lives of a teenagers living though the Troubles in 90s Northern Ireland.

Tweeting that she was “Listening to the #MeaningfulVote debate through the sound of the flutes marching outside...”. Black shared an image of the show’s long-suffering teacher Sister Michael, asking: “Am I in Hell?”

Castmember Nicola Coughlan, who plays schoolgirl Clare, soon noticed and sent an “omg” message to Siobhan McSweeney, who plays the nun.

McSweeney retweeted the material and, getting in on the act, fellow SNP MP Angela Crawley told both actors: “All of your gifs are what get us through the day.”

Commenting on Black’s post, one tweeter suggested she was just in “purga-Tory”.
