AS the rest of us were still trying to process the absolute shambles we saw in the UK Parliament last night, Jeremy Corbyn felt he had more pressing matters to attend to.
Never mind the Brexit threat that grows ever closer. Labour's leader decided it was more important to focus on attacking the SNP, dragging up a 40-year-old myth to do so.
With it being the 40th anniversary of a vote of no confidence in James Callaghan's Labour Government that led to a General Election that Margaret Thatcher won, he hit out at SNP MPs for the way they voted all those years ago.
The claim that the SNP brought the UK Thatcher has been thoroughly debunked – here's a link to a piece doing just that.
But Twitter was also keen to set the record straight. Users reacted furiously, and – unusually for Corbyn, who has a loyal following on social media – attracted quite the ratio of angry replies to likes.
Here are some of the top responses:

Dear @jeremycorbyn - instead of talking about things that happened when I was eight years old, how about showing some leadership today? You could start by asking yourself why the polls show you still trailing behind the most incompetent Tory government in our lifetimes. https://t.co/3oYW4TL9kp

Still amazes me that 11 MPs were able to outvote the other 524. Arithmetic was obviously very different in the 1970s. https://t.co/78vYKszM5k

Forty years ago, strikes all over the UK during the Winter of Discontent were just winding up. @UKLabour was in government at the time. pic.twitter.com/PKm45Xbbdr

Scotland elected Labour MPs during the time that England kept electing Thatcher, and it did us zero good, because England elects UK governments.

Your wee video will only work on the auld religious fanatics who already support Labour.

The SNP have shown true leadership and a remarkable strength against the Tory government over the last few years, ESPECIALLY @TommySheppard. It was he who stood up and held the Tories to account in Parliament when they tried to cover up the crimes of Brexit. YOU stayed silent.

Just 88 years ago this summer, this Labour Party Prime Minister got into bed with the Tories and shared the top posts in Government with 'them'. I think Jeremy Corbyn should apologise now. pic.twitter.com/oud5AEACHR

Those Ravenscraig Towers coming down are the reason I joined @theSNP. Wee reminder @NicolaSturgeon & @FergusEwingMSP saved Steel in my constituency in 2016 & I was proud to be part of the Steel task force. As for your rewrite of history https://t.co/HHflXdWWGV

Dear @jeremycorbyn thanks for reminding me why I no longer vote Labour. #misinformation Oh and what are your lot abstaining on today!

Correction: forty years ago, SNP MPs voted to bring down an unpopular government that had denied Scotland the Assembly its people had voted for, meaning that we were subjected to the worst of the Tory government England next voted in. https://t.co/nvAarphLQa

I hope for England's sake they get a Labour government but it's crap like this that ensures you'll need to do it without Scotland's help. I'll never vote for your party again, you have much more recent form in getting into bed with the Tories.

Jeremy reaching out and building bridges, the way only he can. Indulging in such ancient point-scoring at a time like this truly shows us the measure of the man. https://t.co/nJeKrCSQyV

This is what you choose to tweet today? You might want to start a new party with Jacob Rees Mogg. We can call it the Men from the Past party.

I was at school. Rather than produce this kind of silly video (your interpretation of history is mince btw) why don’t you work out why, today, Labour has sunk to third place in Scotland & you trail the most inept PM since the War? Try focusing on this century. https://t.co/6ojx9QxXTI

Why do you blame the 11 SNP MPs, but not the 13 Liberals, nor the 34 Labour MPs who triggered the vote by blocking devolution? pic.twitter.com/TZMjLgEDaA

Absolutely pathetic politicking which assumes that voters in Scotland are nitwits who don’t see right through you.

Really? This is what you have to say today? The day before we weee due to leave the EU? I am done.

Scots will always remember Labour MPs embracing Tory MPs when they colluded against Scotland 5 years ago. And a Labour leader who encouraged Scots to vote for Tories.

Sorry, Jeremy, we're not sure this will be doing much to boost Labour's dire polling in Scotland...
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
