THE Tory Government has really hit the pits as the Brexit denouement nears. Theresa May has now resorted to pleading at a speech in Grimsby that the EU give way, according to the PM, on the “divisive “ Irish backstop.

The backstop was in fact a section specially inserted at the request of Theresa May to accommodate the Good Friday Agreement. It is not divisive per se. Has she really had full overview of her actions and intentions? The fact is that her warring minority administration, bolstered by a bribed DUP, are at odds with each other.

Furthermore, the whole Brexit scenario was compromised by red lines at the outset, cack-handed planning beforehand (or even none at all), jingoistic jibes, irreconcilable wish-lists about easy outcomes and new deals worldwide, all driven by “constructive ambiguity” and an arrogant sense of entitlement as the EU would come cap in hand begging for an agreement. German car manufacturers and Italian Prosecco vintners would be desperate!

As the past three weeks have been spent not listening to the EU’s firm statements, the same idiocy continues. It has not occurred to HM Government that it is taking the UK out of the EU.

The second blunder by the Tories was to avoid – in fact refuse – any joint input from the other parties at Westminster. We hear now, for example, that Scots have to accept that the UK is leaving, but even yet no final details are extant on withdrawal, let alone the future political declaration on future relations. But all inputs from the other parties and the devolved governments were shunned, so this has not been a pan-British approach. In fact, there is no Northern Irish Government at Stormont and Theresa May has only engaged with the DUP – or rather, been forced to bribe it for support!

So on all counts the UK Government has not acted within the spirit and letter of its precious Union.

Then there is the blaming. The Foreign Secretary has just said the EU is to blame for the impasse at this final juncture of Article 50. Time is running out and it should move to accommodate the leavers! History will judge it if there is no deal.

Such blind attitudes and the presumptuous sense of entitlement from the Foreign Secretary are no doubt creating good relations at this critical juncture.

The final irony must be the position of Theresa May. She is in a real fix now – a Remainer who took on the poisoned chalice post referendum. One who has been lambasted by the hard Brexiteers in her own party who led the Leave campaign is now being hung out to dry as they plot the post-May government at Westminster.

There have been a record number of resignations from the Cabinet and defeats in the Commons since Theresa May took over.

The legacy is not looking good for posterity and the results of this Brexit debacle have already shown up the internal parliamentary processes in the precious Union to be unfit for any purpose. Bumbling ministers, hapless state secretaries past and present, even a PM who supported and voted an amendment to her backstop in Parliament! Not much Orderrrr there any more.

Scots voted to remain in the EU. We will not accept that we must remain in this lop-sided Union where partnership is a sham! We will move to running indyref2.

The bonds that are supposed to bind us together have now been well and truly shattered by the actions of the UK upholders at Westminster.

The English can have their Parliament back all to themselves. They deserve it well and truly!
