THERESA May's bizarre reference to a Compare the Market ad in the House of Commons left many puzzled last week - but an explanation has finally surfaced.

During a back-and-forth about Brexit with SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford, the Prime Minister quipped that "He should vote for a deal – simples!".

The odd decision to mimic the meerkats from a popular TV ad resulted in wide-spread derision online, leaving commentators wondering what she was thinking.

However, according to the Mail on Sunday, the outdated jape was the result of a bet with one of May's aides.

The PM's Parliamentary Private Secretary Seema Kennedy reportedly had a wager with Tory MP Simon Hoare that she could get May to drop the reference.

And the prize for making her boss look like a bit of a fool? Tea at the Ritz costing £58, or £77 with some champagne.
