NINTENDO has unveiled two brand new Pokémon games for its Switch console - and the game map looks awfy familiar.

The new games, named Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, will build on the popular monster-hunting franchise and are set in the lush Galar region.

An online broadcast with Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori at Pokémon’s developer, Game Freak, revealed a Britain-inspired map with picturesque villages and large urban cities, including one featuring a Big Ben-like clock tower.

However travelling northward, it looks like players will encounter an area of the map that may have been inspired by Scotland, with a broad mountainous region that could represent the Highlands.

If the map is indeed loosely representative of the British landmass, it would follow that some of the map will also reflect the Scottish landscape.

The broadcast also featured footage of battles with trainers as well as the three new starter Pokémon: the grass-based chimp Grookey, fire-rabbit Scorbunny and water lizard Sobble.

While details are currently sparse, it's expected that the new games will introduce plenty of new pocket monsters to catch, with each game containing a slightly different mix.

Pokémon Sword and Shield will be released worldwide late in 2019, and mark the first new entries in the RPG series for the Switch console.
